Basal metabolic rate (BMR) represents the energy the body requires under strict laboratory conditions — lying still, fasted, thermoneutral. Resting energy expenditure (REE) is the more practical figure, measured under ordinary resting conditions and typically 10–20% higher than BMR. For most purposes, REE is the number that matters in daily life.
Occasional meal gaps of 12–16 hours appear to have a negligible effect on basal metabolic rate in most adults. Sustained significant energy restriction over weeks, however, is associated with adaptive thermogenesis — a downward adjustment in resting expenditure that the body uses to preserve reserves. The extent of this response varies considerably between individuals.
The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the energy cost of digesting, absorbing, and processing nutrients. It accounts for roughly 10% of total daily energy expenditure on a mixed diet — though this varies. Protein carries the highest thermic cost (20–30% of its caloric value), while fats carry the lowest (0–3%). The composition of a meal therefore influences how much of its energy the body actually retains.

Eating the largest meal earlier in the day aligns intake with the body's peak capacity for nutrient partitioning and tends to support more even energy availability across waking hours.
Metabolic flexibility describes the body's capacity to switch between fuel sources — primarily glucose and fatty acids — in response to availability and demand. A flexible metabolism draws on stored fat readily during fasted states and switches to carbohydrate efficiently after eating. Reduced flexibility is associated with sluggish post-meal energy dips and difficulty sustaining activity during gaps between meals.
